As a Richmond newborn photographer, the light I love most is the kind that comes through the windows of a home in the morning, soft and even and full of warmth. It is the light that new parents see every day, feeding in the early hours, watching their

baby sleep, sitting quietly in those strange, still weeks when the world has shrunk to these four walls. That is the light I want to work in. Not a studio's artificial version of it. The real thing, in your home.

I have been photographing newborns and babies across Richmond, Kew, East Sheen, and Mortlake for years, and I return to home sessions again and again. Not because studios are

wrong, but because home is where these early moments actually live. And the images we make there carry that truth.

Why Home Sessions Work Better for Richmond Newborn Photography

There is a version of newborn photography that involves tightly wrapped poses, prop baskets, and very precisely arranged scenes. It produces a certain kind of image, and some families love it. It is not what I do.

What I do is quieter and, I think, more honest. I work around your baby's natural rhythms, in your own space, using the light that already exists in your home. There is no posing that goes

against a newborn's body. There are no props that could overwhelm a tiny face. There is no cold studio to travel to when you have a four-day-old baby and have not slept properly since Tuesday.

Home sessions are also simply more comfortable for everyone. You can feed whenever you need to. You can take a break. Older siblings can watch a programme and come in when they

are ready, rather than being managed in a waiting area. Parents can be in the photographs naturally, because they are in their own environment. The resulting images have a warmth and specificity that studio photographs rarely achieve.

As a Richmond newborn photographer serving the surrounding area, I am usually able to be with you within a short drive. That matters in the early weeks, when anything that reduces logistical complexity is genuinely worth something.

The Right Age Window

For newborn sessions, I recommend booking for the first three weeks of life, ideally between five and twenty-one days. In this window, babies sleep deeply and for longer stretches, which makes quiet, still portraits possible. They are also at that extraordinary stage of newness that passes so quickly.

I know that booking a photographer before you have even given birth can feel strange. But this is exactly when to do it. I take a small number of newborn bookings each month and hold a due-date slot for each family. When your baby arrives, you let me know, and we agree on the right day within the first three weeks.

For babies who have passed the newborn stage, I offer baby sessions between three and nine months. This is a different but equally beautiful window. Three to six months gives you

smiles and eye contact. Six to nine months brings sitting, rolling, and the beginning of personality. Both stages produce images that families treasure enormously, and they are quite different from each other.

What to Prepare at Home

You do not need to do anything elaborate. A tidy home helps but a perfect home is not the goal and genuinely not something I would ever expect from a family with a new baby.

A few practical things that make a real difference:

A clean window with good natural light. It does not need to be large. A bedroom window, a bay window in a living room, even a kitchen window can work beautifully. The best light is diffused and even, without direct sunlight streaming through. North-facing or east-facing windows are ideal in the morning.

A neutral blanket or two. Soft white, cream, or grey works best. Avoid very dark colours or bold patterns, which compete with the baby rather than letting the face come forward. You probably already have something suitable.

Snacks and activities for older siblings. If you have a toddler or older child at home, having something to occupy them during the quieter parts of the session means everyone stays relaxed. I include siblings naturally and warmly in sessions, but I never force it. The best sibling photographs happen when children decide themselves to come in and meet the baby.

A warm room. Newborns need to be warm. I often ask parents to raise the room temperature a little before I arrive, particularly if we are photographing the baby in just a nappy and

blanket. Comfortable baby, better photographs.
