If you are looking for a Barnes family photographer who truly knows the area, I can say without any hesitation that Barnes is one of the most photographically generous places in London. I have lived and worked here for years. The light here is different from the rest of the city. The Thames softens everything. The trees are generous with their canopy. And because it is a quiet, unhurried sort of place, families actually relax here in a way that is harder to achieve somewhere louder and more crowded.

As a Barnes family photographer based on Barnes High Street, I have spent years learning where the light falls at different times of year, which paths are muddy after rain, where toddlers tend to run off, and which corners make even the most camera-shy dad forget about the camera entirely. Here is my honest guide to the spots I return to again and again.

Barnes Green: A Barnes Family Photographer's Favourite Starting Point

Barnes Green sits at the heart of the village, and it has that rare quality of feeling both spacious and intimate at the same time. The duck pond adds movement and life to images, and younger children are almost magnetically drawn to it, which means you get natural, unposed moments without any coaxing from me.

The surrounding green works well for any season. In spring, the blossom trees frame beautifully. In autumn, the leaves bring warmth to the whole frame. I tend to shoot here in the late afternoon when the light is lower and the colours deepen. Families with children under five find this spot particularly wonderful because there is a contained quality to it. Children wander but do not go far.

Best time of day: late afternoon, from around 4pm onwards in summer.

Best for: families with toddlers and young children, couples expecting a baby and wanting a relaxed, village-feel session.

Barnes Common

The Common is where I take families who want something a little wilder and more atmospheric. It is large enough that you rarely feel crowded, and the mix of open grassland and dense woodland means we can create very different moods within the same session.

In spring and summer, the light through the trees is extraordinary. In winter, the bare branches and mist give images a stripped-back, elegant quality that I find genuinely beautiful. The Common is also a place where energetic children can run freely, which is always my preference. The best photographs come when children are doing something, not standing still.

Best time of day: golden hour in summer (8pm+), mid-morning in winter when the mist lingers.

Best for: families with older children, active families who want movement and energy in their images.

The Thames Path by Barnes Bridge

This is probably my most-used location, and for good reason. The path along the Thames near Barnes Bridge gives you the river, the bridge itself, the boats moored along the bank, and a quality of light that changes hour by hour. There is something about being near moving water that relaxes people, and I see it in every session I do here.

The path can be busy on weekend mornings, so I typically prefer weekday sessions here, or arriving before 9am at weekends. The arched ironwork of Barnes Bridge in the background gives images a quietly London quality without being obviously tourist-y.

Best time of day: early morning for golden, misty light; early evening for warmth and colour.

Best for: most family sizes, couples + maternity sessions, families who want a classic London feel without central London.

A note on the tide

It is worth checking the tide before we shoot here. At low tide, the mudflats are exposed and the composition shifts entirely. Both can be beautiful, but they are different aesthetically. I always check this in advance and factor it into our session plan.

Barnes High Street

There is a version of a family portrait session that takes place entirely in the open countryside, and there is another version that lives in the texture of daily life. Barnes High Street suits the second kind. The independent shop fronts, the painted houses, the colour and character of the street itself make for images that feel genuinely lived-in.

I do not use the High Street for traditional posed portraits. Instead, I use it as a backdrop for candid walking sequences: a family getting ice cream, parents carrying small children past the bookshop window, siblings deciding which way to turn. These images tend to be the ones families look at in twenty years and feel most strongly.

Best time of day: weekday mornings when the street is quieter.

Best for: families who want story-telling images, documentary-style sessions, families who live locally and want their neighbourhood in the photographs.

Leg O'Mutton Reservoir (Lonsdale Road Nature Reserve)

This is a location that most people outside Barnes do not know exists, which is exactly why I love it. The reservoir at Lonsdale Road is a local nature reserve with boardwalks, open water, reeds, and a real sense of stillness. Birdlife is everywhere. The light on the water is exceptional.

It is not suitable for very young children who need flat, open ground, but for families with children who can walk confidently, it offers something genuinely distinctive. The images I make here tend to be quieter, more contemplative, and they have a quality that studio or urban portraits simply cannot replicate.

Best time of day: morning, when the light is low and the water catches it.

Best for: families who want something original, parents who love nature and want that to show in their photographs.

Booking a Barnes Family Session

If you are looking for a Barnes family photographer who knows these locations properly, not just from a map but from years of working in them in every light and every season, I would love to hear from you. Family sessions start from £550 for a weekday session, with weekend sessions from £650.

Every session is relaxed and child-led. I do not ask families to stand and pose. I follow you, and I wait for the moments that are already there. You can learn more about how I work on my family photography page, and if you would like to get in touch, I would be glad to hear about your family and what you are hoping to capture.
